Schelli Olmanson McCabe could only find "the boring kind of reference books" when her young son was bringing home caterpillars and asking her what they turned into. It was this childhood desire of her son to learn about metamorphosis that led to the writing of a children’s book about the different types of caterpillars and the butterflies and moths they become.

Schelli McCabe launched her own publishing company, Waterfall Ridge, to publish her story. Her boys were a huge help in developing the story and she wanted to model the characters in the story after her boys, something a large publisher would not have allowed.

By the time the story of two boys playing outdoors and finding caterpillars evolved, seven years had flown by, so the oldest son who inspired the story was too old to model for the pictures. Luckily his 2 next oldest brothers cheerfully acted out every page so a photograph could be taken of each scene. It was from these photographs that illustrator Michelle Depuydt based the illustrations for the story. The end result is a wonderful educational book , The Great Caterpillar Adventure, which celebrates the gift of discovery and can also be used as a reference book for a young readers’ own caterpillar adventure.

The Great Caterpillar Adventure is a book celebrating the gift of discovery. It includes a story, an explanation of how to tell butterflies from moths, how to collect caterpillars and hatch them out as well as an identification chart of caterpillars, butterflies and moths to help children with their own caterpillar adventures. It teaches children (and adults!) where you might find different kinds of caterpillars and how to distinguish between them and what they will turn into within the context of a story. It can also be used as a field guide or reference book.
